My metaphor for the progress toward jnana is that of a dry seasoned log on a bed of coals steadily burning through. The coals are the cumulative assurances of faith and practice. The process is illative in the sense that Newman gave it of a movement towards a state not one of rational conclusion but a condition of confidence in the converging and convincing direction towards truth. In advaita this truth takes the form of a mahavakya such astat tvam asi(that thou art) which casts its power back to the inchoate intuitions which we have like a magnet might organise the chaos of iron filings into a pattern. It is the engine of illation.
